Councilmember Phazon Nash expressed worry about walking downtown at night due to the city's track record of violence. WSLS reports residents are advising one another to practice street smarts and avoid troublemakers, especially when alcohol and guns are involved. Nash, who chairs the city’s Gun Violence Prevention Commission, says efforts are being made to keep residents safe downtown, including the quick response by the Roanoke Police Department.
