In a move similar to the federal DOGE cuts being made, the list of potential agency cuts aims to save over $842,000 but would not affect elementary or middle school crossing guards. County officials are exploring the possibility of using a private company for crossing guard roles due to police staffing shortages. WTOP reports school board members and parents have expressed concerns about the potential impact on safety near schools, with some advocating for the retention of crossing guards. The Board of Supervisors will evaluate the proposed reduction based on safety criteria before finalizing the budget in May.
