Roanoke City Public Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony at Preston Park Elementary School to celebrate the construction of a new school. The current school is so overcrowded that classes are being held in hallways. Dr. Verletta White, the superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools, tells WFXR the new school will accommodate up to 700 students and feature quality improvements like lighting and multipurpose fields for community use. The construction site was moved back to allow a larger area for people to walk and bike around the school. Officials expect the new school to be completed in 2026.
