Virginia's NAACP branch filed suit against the Shenandoah County School Board last year after members of the board voted to reinstate the names of Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby-Lee Elementary School. The schools were given new names in 2020, but their original names were restored after new school board members were elected. The NAACP claims the use of Confederate names is unconstitutional because they violate "fundamental principles of equality." The judge ruled last week that the decision to rename the schools could violate the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
