Officials say Frances Hazel Reid Elementary School will be renamed Mildred and Richard Loving Elementary School, while Mercer Middle School will become Gum Spring Middle School. WAVY reports that the decision to rename the schools came after a review by History Matters, which found connections to the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Charles Fenton Mercer, a slave owner and advocate for resettling freed slaves in Africa. The renaming motions passed by a 6-3 vote, with some board members expressing support for the change while others argued it was a waste of money.
