Federal and state lawmakers have introduced legislation to strengthen support for sexual assault victims on college campuses, but progress has been slow. Senator Tim Kaine reintroduced the SOS Campus Act, which requires schools to appoint an advocate for victims of sexual assault. A similar bill in the General Assembly, HB 369, aimed to update sexual misconduct policies and increase accountability for institutions but was killed in committee. The Virginia Mercury reports Liberty University faced a $14 million settlement for violating the Clery Act by failing to disclose information on crimes, including sexual assaults, on campus.
