The project combines oyster reefs with native wetland plantings to protect the shoreline from erosion, flooding, and pollution. Volunteers and staff have begun placing the first oyster castles as part of the initiative, which will install over 5,500 reef structures and other eco-friendly materials. WAVY reports that the project aims to create a natural buffer and filtration system at the water's edge, adapting to sea level rise and improving water quality in the urban watershed.
