Joe Ulmer, owner of the Overlook Produce, Bakery and Deli, says he's been keeping an eye out for the Tarnish Plant Bug, which feeds on strawberry blooms, stunting their growth. WHSV reports the pests destroyed 80 percent of his strawberry crop last year. Ulmer says the berries will be ready to pick by May 15th. In the meantime, the Community School's Annual Strawberry Festival in downtown Roanoke is set to attract thousands this weekend, offering homemade strawberry shortcakes, sundaes, and chocolate-dipped berries. The event serves as a fundraiser for the small independent school, supporting financial aid, low costs, and teacher development.
