Many kids will spend more time at a friend or family member’s house during the summer and before your child heads out the door, advocates say asking about gun ownership is imperative. Many gun supporters believe society needs to normalize locking up guns the same way they would lock up other chemicals or medications in their home. Programs like Be SMART and Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program both educate families with school-age children about responsible gun ownership. Parents can protect their children by knowing if they will be in a home with an unsecured gun and making choices about either teaching the child gun safety or not allowing the child to be in a home that is potentially unsafe.
