Governor Youngkin wants to add millions of dollars in new education funding to the state budget. The governor announced Friday that he wants to increase direct aid to Virginia schools by over 500-million dollars. The proposed spending includes around 200-million for increased support to English language learners, lab school partnerships with HBCUs and dual enrollment high school courses. He also wants to add 66-million for a new student assessment system and nearly seven-million for school resource and security officers. The governor is expected to unveil all of his proposed budget amendments later this week.

The bribery trial of former Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins is expected to wrap up later this week in Charlottesville. Federal prosecutors have accused Jenkins of accepting bribes in exchange for doing favors for local businessmen, including making them special deputies. Multiple undercover agents reportedly were sworn in as auxiliary deputies after giving thousands in cash to the former sheriff. Jenkins has denied the charges and turned down a plea deal offered by prosecutors earlier this year.
