Help from Central Virginia is on its way to Florida. Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Virginia will help those caught in the path of Hurricane Helene [[huh-LEEN]]. It's expected to be a major hurricane and cause destruction in Northwest Florida. Mary Davis Barton and other volunteers left yesterday from Henrico for Tallahassee.  
 
A child and an adult are hurt after a fight on a school bus in Petersburg. It happened yesterday afternoon on a bus out of Cold Spring Elementary School. Police say two elementary school students were fighting on the bus, and once it stopped at a Family Dollar on Halifax Street, a 16-year-old boy got on through the back door and attacked one of the kids. Police say the kid that was attacked suffered a broken nose. The bus driver got involved to break up the fight and was also attacked.  
 
A deadly hit and run case has ended in a mistrial in Chesapeake. Sara Bartlett has the story.

Petersburg wants to ensure those battling substance abuse can get the help they need. The city marked National Substance Abuse Recovery Month yesterday with a program at the library. Virginia First Lady Suzanne Youngkin and Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham were there. Brittany Ahrend was grateful for the high profile support. She says she battled alcohol and prescription drug addiction for over a decade and died twice. Ahrend tells 8News if we keep talking about addiction and recovery, it gets people believing recovery is possible.  
 
The City of Lynchburg is getting a big federal grant to help them hire personnel at a new fire station.
