The change happened Tuesday when 27 citizens of Glen Lyn voted to dissolve the town's charter. The 141 year-old city will become an unincorporated community of Giles [[jiles]] County. According to Virginia Places dot org, Glen Lyn is the fourth town in Virginia to dissolve its charter since 1995, those towns were Clover in Halifax County, Castlewood in Russell County, and St. Charles in Lee County. The Cardinal News reports the town's decline began in 2015 when Appalachian Power shut down Glen Lyn’s coal-fired plant. Built in 1919, the plant employed many of the town’s residents and the associated tax revenue accounted for one-quarter of the town's budget.
