A recent study by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission revealed that three Virginia public universities - University of Mary Washington, Virginia State University, and Radford University - face "some" viability risks that could threaten their operations. The Virginia Mercury reports factors contributing to these risks include declining enrollment, financial challenges, and the shift towards STEM education. While some institutions have a "very low" viability risk, the study recommends measures such as capping student fees for athletics and improving enrollment operations to address cost efficiency issues. The state has increased funding for higher education, but further actions may be needed to ensure the sustainability of all institutions.
