A judge says a case against the city's 10-to-1 voting system will go to trial. The ruling issued earlier this week is in connection to a lawsuit filed earlier this year by a group that includes Councilwoman Linwood Branch. The suit claims that Virginia Beach is obligated by charter to follow a different voting process. The group also believes the current system illegally manipulates voters' rights by eliminating three at-large seats. The 10-to-1 system means residents can only vote for candidates in their district. 13 News Nows reports that a trial date has not been set. In the meantime, the judge says the current voting process will remain in place for the 2024 election.
