The garden apartment complexes in Norfolk, built between 1942 and 1949, provided much-needed housing during WWII with peaceful suburban living experiences. The 37th Street Cottages Historic District in Virginia Beach, constructed between 1913 and 1928, were originally vacation homes and later converted into apartments to address housing shortages during the war. 13 News Now reports that the sites, along with others across the state, will be added to the Virginia Landmarks Register by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, allowing owners to pursue historic rehabilitation tax credits for improvements.
