Elected officials in Virginia Beach are considering a project to redevelop eight acres of woods into tidal wetlands. It is land that was originally wetlands before being covered with dredge material in the 1970s. The $12 million dollar effort aims to restore the wetlands habitat and provide wetland credits for flood prevention projects. However, the plan has sparked controversy as it involves removing thousands of trees, prompting students to conduct a tree count. In response, the city says they plans to plant over 600 trees, including Live Oaks and Water Oaks, as part of the project.
