The Virginia Department of Health in Roanoke City say that normally there are a handful of cases, but since January of last year there has been more than 30 cases of whooping cough. According to the CDC, its considered a highly contagious disease caused by bacteria in the nose and throat and spread through sneezing or coughing. Health officials tell WFXR there doesn't seem to be a specific age group or area that is showing a higher number of infections than others. The health department recommends staying home if you don't feel well and continue stay up to date on your vaccines.
