Experts warn Six common wildlife species in Virginia, including deer mice, Virginia opossum, raccoons, groundhogs, Eastern cottontails, and Eastern red bats, have high rates of the COVID-19 virus, likely contracted from humans. Researchers at Virginia Tech University found evidence of the virus in these animals. While there is little risk of humans contracting COVID-19 from wildlife, animals in areas with high human activity, such as hiking trails, showed higher levels of the virus. Experts tell the Daily Gazette the virus can be transmitted from humans to wildlife through discarded food.
