Multiple lawmakers had urged the governor to adopt the direct file system after a trial in 12 states earlier this year. The governor responded late last week with a letter saying the General Assembly needs to change state law before Virginians can use the program. Youngkin also suggested there were legal issues raised by other states that need to be resolved before Virginia will participate. The governor did say that the state may adopt the direct file program in the future.
