The Page County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a weekend drowning in the Shenandoah River. Thirty-seven-year-old Melvin Sorto from Washington, D.C. died Sunday afternoon while swimming near Compton Rapids. Witnesses said Sorto became distressed, went underwater and never resurfaced. Investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in Sorto's death.
We're in store for another dangerously hot day in Central Virginia. The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect from 11:00 to 8:00 today in Richmond and the surrounding counties. Heat index values could reach 108. That could cause heat illness. The NWS advises drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun and checking on relatives and neighbors.
