A Fairfax County animal rescue is now hosting nearly 100 dogs and cats from shelters in North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene. Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is working to find temporary and permanent homes for the animals. They spent days in shelters that were left without electricity and water due to the storm. A couple of other northern Virginia rescues have also taken in animals displaced by Helene.
Richmond is seeing what the police chief calls a significant reduction in violent crime. Police Chief Rick Edwards released the results yesterday of Operation Safe Summer. He says shootings were down 20 percent in the last two years, and homicides were down 18 percent compared to last year. Edwards says Operation Safe Summer wouldn't have been possible without the help of the VSP, the FBI, ATF, the DEA and Henrico Police. He says while all those agencies are short-staffed, they all stepped up to help like all good friends do.
