A high school student in Hampton is facing charges after being found with a gun this morning. WAVY-TV reports that it happened at Pheebus High School during what the principal called a routine weapons detection check. A security officer at the school found and confiscated the gun from a 16-year-old student. That student has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property. Authorities say there was no threat to anyone at the school and the investigation continues.
The University of Lynchburg is letting go of 40 staff members and cutting more than a dozen programs. WSET-TV reports the announcement with school officials say the changes are a result of "in-depth analysis and review" to "best meet the needs of students and optimize their resources." Twelve undergraduate programs, including areas like management, physics, music education, religious studies and more, will be cut. Five grad program, in education, cybersecurity and reading will also be cut. Students already enrolled in these programs will be able to complete their degrees.
