A judge has approved dropping the charges against five of eight Henrico County sheriff's deputies involved involved in the death of Irvo Otieno at Central State Hospital. WRIC reports that a Dinwiddie County Attorney filed motions last week and now a judge has approved dropping the second-degree murder charges. Otieno was being transferred from Henrico County Regional Jail West to the hospital last year and staff was attempting to restrain him. He died after being restrained. Charges are still pending against three of the deputies.
Meanwhile, an attorney for the Otieno family has responded saying they want federal prosecutors -- the Department of Justice -- involved in the case.
Virginia U.S. Senators are supporting a move to make birth control accessible at pharmacies across the country. The Access To Birth Control Act would ensure that pharmacies have timely access to the drugs and that there would be penalties for any pharmacy that creates and environment in which someone feels uncomfortable getting the contraception.
