Three Harrisonburg teachers are moving forward with a lawsuit against the city school system over the use of transgender students' preferred pronouns. The teachers originally filed the lawsuit in 2022, claiming the school board violated their right to free speech and religious freedom. The lawsuit was renewed last week and referenced last year's state Supreme Court opinion that school districts can't compel employees to use a student's preferred pronouns. The legal team representing the Harrisonburg teachers helped another Virginia teacher get a 575-thousand dollar settlement in a similar lawsuit.
Virginia Senator Mark Warner says he will keep pushing for more aid for western Virginia families affected by Hurricane Helene. The Democratic senator was in Giles County yesterday to get a first-hand look at the damage caused by the storm. He also spoke to several affected families to try to determine their current needs. Warner released a statement on social media saying he was heartbroken by the destruction and would work to get more immediate and long-term assistance for families and small business owners.
