A man is dead after an apartment fire in Galax. First responders were called to the Harmony Village Apartments early yesterday morning. Crews attempted to enter an apartment at the location but were blocked by heavy smoke and heat. They later found 55-year-old Kenneth Parnell inside the apartment and pronounced him dead at the scene. Preliminary reports indicate the fire was accidental and may have been caused by an oxygen tank.  
 
 
Norfolk city leaders are searching for sand to replenish eroded areas along the coastline, with some areas needing sand this winter to bridge the gap. The city has experienced high tides leading to steep drop-offs from the dunes, prompting the need for interim repairs. Tammy Halstead, an assistant city engineer, tells WAVY they are looking for just the right sand.

While the cost of the fix is unknown, the city is exploring options to stockpile sand and is looking at various sources including neighboring Virginia Beach. The United States Army Corps of Engineers may need to conduct more frequent renourishment efforts due to advances in technology and wave action science.
