Two Virginia-based ships are reportedly involved in a weekend incident that caused a U.S. Navy jet to crash in the Red Sea. U.S. Central Command says an F/A-18 fighter was shot down after it took off from the USS Harry S. Truman on Sunday. The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg reportedly fired on the plane by mistake. The two Navy pilots ejected safely, though one may have suffered minor injuries during the ejection. The Truman and the Gettysburg are both stationed in Norfolk, while the F/A-18 and its crew are reportedly assigned to Virginia's Naval Air Station Oceana. A full investigation into the friendly fire incident is already underway.

Holiday travelers will want to keep a close eye on the weather this week. A storm could bring a white Christmas from North Dakota east into Michigan and the Northeast. Meanwhile freeze and frost advisories are in effect as far south as parts of Georgia and Florida. Meteorologists say Monday is sunny in Virginia but some light precipitation is possible well to the southTuesday, with the threat of some light freezing rain or drizzle early on around Emporia over towards Wakefield. A few rain showers will linger through the morning into the early afternoon across southeastern Virginia on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day be dry and seasonable, with a mixture of sun and clouds.
