A school in Alleghany County will remain closed as district officials investigate a carbon monoxide leak. Covington Middle School was evacuated last Friday after an odor was detected in the building. Investigators found a natural gas oven in the school's kitchen was not burning properly. A faulty ventilation system allowed carbon monoxide to spread through the school. The Alleghany Highlands school district announced yesterday that students at Covington Middle will switch to virtual learning through Monday so their investigation can be completed.
