The Virginia Department of Transportation is giving drivers a few tips about staying cool while traveling during hot weather. The agency says car owners should have their air conditioners checked before hitting the road, since driving without A-C can be dangerous on hot summer days. Hoses and belts should also be checked because heat can put additional stress on worn parts. Every vehicle should have an emergency kit to help deal with breakdowns and injuries while traveling. V-DOT also reminds Virginians to never leave children, seniors or pets inside a car on a hot day due to the risk of heat stroke.
