Police have arrested a fifth suspect in connection with a shooting earlier this month at the Manassas Mall. Investigators took 18-year-old Tayvion Thornton into custody on Monday for malicious wounding and several other charges. Police say two groups got into a fight in the mall's food court on July 9th, wounding a bystander and one of the suspects. Both are expected to recover.
Central Virginia's in store for another unusually hot day. The National Weather Service says a Heat Advisory is in effect today from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Heat index values in Richmond and the surrounding area are expected to reach 109. That could cause heat illness. The NWS advises drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun and checking on relatives and neighbors.
The Virginia Department of Education is getting ready to hold a series of community conversations across the state.Preview: The Mediterranean diet could improve children's heart health. The diet, which focuses on plant-based cooking along with fruits, beans, seeds, fish and lean meat has shown benefits for adults. But new research shows children on the diet for at least eight weeks showed drops in blood pressure and cholesterol. The study was published last week in the journal JAMA Network Open.
