The Virginia State Police says violent crime in the Commonwealth increased last year. A report released by the agency yesterday shows a one-point-three-percent increase in violent crime from 2022 to 2023. The report shows declines in the number of murders and forcible sex offenses reported statewide, but also shows increases in areas like kidnapping and abduction, negligent manslaughter, aggravated assault and simple assault. Motor vehicle thefts and drug offenses also increased statewide last year.

Parents in Richmond may have reason to feel reassured. All RPS schools passed their fire inspections before classes started on Monday. Deputy Fire Marshal Captain William Spindle tells CBS 6 the Richmond Fire Department started the inspections in May and finished in July.  
 
 
A federal judge is blocking a ban on noncompete agreements that was set to take effect next month. The Federal Trade Commission this year banned most noncompete agreements, which keep employees from leaving their jobs to work for a competitor. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other groups sued, arguing the ban would make it harder for companies to retain talent. An FTC spokesperson said the agency is strongly considering an appeal.
