Many communities in Virginia struggle with funding their schools. The Virginia School Boards Association President, Cardell Patillo Junior says there is an ongoing issue of underfunding in Virginia's K-12 public schools, as revealed by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission report. The report identified the state's Standards of Quality funding formula as a major factor in the underfunding, with schools needing $17.3 billion dollars in state and local funds, exceeding the $10.7 billion dollars indicated by the formula. The Joint Subcommittee to Study Elementary and Secondary Public Education will meet on September 16 to discuss the findings.
A Washington, D.C. law firm is threatening the state of Virginia with a lawsuit over the decision to allow presidential candidate Cornel West to appear on the November ballot. The Elias Law Group sent a letter to the state Department of Elections on Monday saying the decision violated Virginia law. West was initially disqualified from the ballot due to issues with forms turned in by his campaign. That decision was reversed earlier this month after talks between the West campaign and state election officials. The law firm asked for quick action to remove West, since absentee ballots in Virginia must be printed no later than September 20th.
