A former superintendent of the Virginia State Police has died. Colonel W. Gerald Massengill died yesterday morning at his home in Dinwiddie County. Massengill was a member of the state police for 37 years and was appointed as superintendent in June of 2000. He led the organization for three years, overseeing the state police response to the 9/11 terror attacks and the 2002 sniper attacks in the DC area. Governor Youngkin extended his condolences in a statement yesterday, saying his service and sacrifice will continue to inspire future generations.
