Democratic lawmakers reveal the ways they want to help Virginians during the next session of the General Assembly. A social media post from the Office of the Chaplain notes that Dr. Barry C. Black suffered a subdural hematoma earlier this week and was hospitalized under the care of the U.S. Capitol physician. The post asked for prayers for Chaplain Black, his family and the chaplain's office. The 76-year-old has served as the Senate chaplain since 2003.
The Virginia State Police will be conducting a special safety enforcement effort on Interstate 95 on Sunday and Monday. The agency says the "Operation DISS-rupt" effort will cover the entire length of the interstate and involve several state police divisions. Troopers will be looking for seat belt violations, distracted and impaired driving and excessive speed. The goal of the effort is to have no deadly crashes during the two-day enforcement period.
The University of Virginia is celebrating a big donation to its women's basketball program. The university announced this week that Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has made a "transformational" donation to benefit the program over several years. The exact amount was not disclosed, though UVA says it's the largest gift in the history of the women's basketball team. Ohanian graduated from the university's School of Commerce in 2005 and is married to women's tennis legend Serena Williams.
