A school resource officer has died after a weekend crash in southwest Virginia. Investigators say 60-year-old Earnest Atwell, Junior of Atkins died early Saturday morning when he lost control of his pickup on Interstate 81 in Smyth County. The vehicle left the road near mile marker 45, overturning at the bottom of a steep bank. Atwell was thrown from the vehicle and died from his injuries. The Virginia State Police are investigating the crash.
Various accidents caused several difficulties for Norfolk drivers Monday morning. A disabled tractor-trailer on I-64 West in Norfolk caused delays, while Tidewater Drive also experienced delays due to crew responses to a hazmat gas spill with no injuries. Additionally, 13News Now reports a vehicle crash on I-64 East near Little Creek Road made things difficult for drivers, causing delays, with the east right lane closed for a time. VDOT reports that the west left shoulder and left lane near Tidewater Drive also had to be closed.
