A University of Virginia doctor is calling the rising number of scams targeting senior citizens "an epidemic." Doctor Laurie Archbald-Pannone is an associate professor of medicine and geriatrics at UVA. In an article published last week, the doctor noted that more than three-billion dollars in senior scams were reported to the FBI last year. Those reports are up nearly 25-percent so far this year, and Doctor Archbald-Pannone is urging seniors to protect themselves from fraud and theft. Her advice includes being cautious of any unsolicited offer, doing research before making decisions and reporting any scams to law enforcement immediately.

The Virginia Department of Health wants swimmers to avoid part of Lake Anna in Louisa County due to unsafe levels of toxic algae. The agency issued a swimming advisory for the North Anna branch of the lake on Friday. Any activity that could lead to swallowing water should be avoided in the area, but boating with proper precautions is okay. The Department of Health says the algae is not connected to an E. coli outbreak being investigated at the lake.
