The Virginia Department of Corrections has taken control of the state's only privately-run prison.Preview: A well-known resort near the Virginia-West Virginia border could be auctioned off later this month. An ad in a West Virginia newspaper shows that the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulfur Springs will be sold to the highest bidder on August 27th at the Greenbrier County courthouse. The resort was founded in 1778 and is currently owned by West Virginia Republican Governor Jim Justice, who is running for the U.S. Senate. A spokesperson for the governor and his companies released a statement saying the Justice family will take "all necessary action" to prevent the auction from happening.
The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a storm system in the Atlantic that could develop into Tropical Storm Debby. Forecasters say the system is currently producing thunderstorms over Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and could threaten the U.S. mainland as early as this weekend.
Residents and businesses are coming together to help a family in Moseley. Corey and Kate Burton have a four-year-old son named Bowen who has cerebral palsy. When word got out that they needed to modify their home to accommodate him, help started pouring in. The Magnolia Green Swim Team raised money for a ramp that Bowen can use to get to his backyard. Then, Creative Home Renovations and Kempsville Building Supplies donated supplies and labor to build the ramp. Kate says they'll be able to use the money that was raised for other needs, and she tells 12 On Your Side all these things are possible because of our neighborhood.
