An impasse is being reported in Rocky Mount over where to place a proposed monument to Black troops in the Civil War.Preview: The Danville Area Humane Society and Danville Deserves Better are both working towards the common goal of reducing euthanasia rates at the shelter. Last year, the shelter euthanized 77% of the 3,500 animals it took in, compared to the state average of 14%. Danville Deserves Better is advocating for lower euthanasia rates through trap, neutering, and releasing cats, and becoming a no-kill shelter with a 90% save rate. Despite disagreements on methods, both organizations are committed to saving more animal lives in Danville. The city council has received letters advocating for change, but the shelter's director believes they are fulfilling their contract and are exploring ways to increase adoptions and funding.
Montgomery County has introduced a career firefighting staff in Elliston for the first time to better serve the community and combat the shortage of volunteer firefighters. The career firefighters will work alongside volunteers to respond to emergency calls and undergo training to ensure they are prepared for any situation. The new Chief, Michael Geary, is proud of the team's performance so far and looks forward to continuing to provide excellent service to the community.
