A Shenandoah Valley man is facing charges after a gun was found in a child's backpack in Orange. The loaded gun was found on September 16th in the backpack of a six-year-old at Orange Elementary School. Investigators say the child did not know the gun was in the backpack. The Orange County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 31-year-old Drakar Rawlings yesterday. He's been charged with abuse and neglect of children, allowing children access to firearms and two other weapons-related charges.
Students need to learn the impact of their words. That's what a lawyer with the Commonwealth's Attorney's office said yesterday at a meeting about school violence and threats. The meeting was called during a time when there seems to be a rise in threats directed at schools across the country. Richmond Police Sergeant Stacy Rogers says there's a zero tolerance policy for bringing a gun into school, but even just threatening to bring a weapon can have consequences. Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Allison Linscott tells 12 On Your Side written threats can be prosecuted, too.
