Hampton Roads is experiencing rising tides due to climate change and sinking land, but the rate of change has remained consistent with past forecasts. The annual sea level rise report card from William & Mary’s Batten School and Virginia Institute of Marine Science shows that the region is accelerating at a high rate compared to the rest of the country. The Daily Press reports that local officials can use this data for long-term planning to adapt infrastructure to rising waters. If current trends continue, Hampton Roads could see over 1.5 feet of sea level rise by 2050.
