The superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools says it looks like teachers will be getting smaller-than-expected pay raises. Dr. Michelle Reid asked the county for a record quarter-billion-dollar budget increase to cover the pay hikes and essential programs, but funding is coming back 85-million-dollars short of that request. Reid says that means her proposal for across-the-board teacher raises of six percent will likely be scaled back to three percent. The school board is still working to finalize next year's budget.
Virginia Military Institute is remembering actor Dabney Coleman following his death last week. Coleman entered the Lexington military college in 1949, but left school to enlist in the Army after the start of the Korean War. Coleman never forgot about his ties to the college, visiting the campus several times and serving as chairman of a successful national fundraising campaign in 1989. Coleman was 92-years-old when he died last Thursday at his home in California.
