A Tennessee-based cleaning company will pay nearly 650-thousand-dollars in penalties after employing at least two dozen children at slaughtering and meat-packing facilities in Virginia and Iowa. The Labor Department announced the deal with Fayette Janitorial Service. An investigation earlier this year found that the children, some as young as 13, were put on overnight sanitation shifts at meat plants in Iowa and Virginia.

Virginia is joining several other states in opposing upcoming changes to the federal government's Title Nine rules. Attorney General Jason Miyares has joined a lawsuit that was filed in Tennessee and has drawn support from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. The new rules are designed to expand the rights of LGBTQ students while also prohibiting schools from disclosing personal information about students. The changes would also protect anyone who exercises their Title Nine rights from retaliation. Miyares called the expansion unlawful and dangerous in a statement and said it would negatively impact families in Virginia.
