Five people are recovering after a fire in an Alexandria high-rise sent them to the hospital. The fire at the Olympus apartment building was reported yesterday afternoon. The fire was located on the 12th floor, but smoke was reported throughout the building. Three firefighters and at least two residents were taken to the hospital. The American Red Cross was working last night with families impacted by the fire.
As some Virginia parents deal with their own stress from the hurricane, they need to monitor their children's anxiety as well. Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Psychology Director Jennifer Katzenstein says the storms caused family disruption and in some cases a loss of home or worse. She says children may manifest worry about future storms, while adolescents may show anxiety by being more irritable than usual.
You should also maintain routines and expectations for good behavior as well as reassure children that parents are doing everything possible to keep them safe.
