The Alleghany Highlands school district is blaming a natural gas oven for a carbon monoxide scare that closed a local school. Students and staff at Covington Middle School began smelling a strange odor at the school on Friday. The building was evacuated and investigators found an oven that was not burning natural gas efficiently. The fumes created by the oven spread through the school because of a faulty ventilation system. The school will be closed today while crews look into the problem and make repair recommendations.
