Nearly a quarter of intimate partner murder-suicides are committed by someone who owned a gun despite existing laws against it. According to a 43-person focus group analysis by the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, the report said reasons they were prohibited from owning a firearm included domestic violence restraining orders, felony convictions, misdemeanor domestic violence crime, or mental health issues. The report also said that children witnessed the incident in 43-percent of those reported and were killed in 16-percent.

A northern Virginia county is trying to get more residents to try composting. Arlington County has partnered with an app called Bigbelly and placed several collection bins around the area. Residents can use the app to unlock the bin nearest to them and drop off food, nut shells, cooking oil, tea leaves, coffee grounds and food-soiled paper products. Items left in the bins will be collected and used to make compost that will be used for landscaping and gardening.
