Actor Tom Cruise is being given the highest civilian honor by the U.S. Navy. Cruise is being honored with the Distinguished Public Service Award from the Navy after playing Maverick in both Top Gun films set in San Diego. The movies are credited with increasing military recruiting, with the Navy saying Cruise has increased public awareness and appreciation for our highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.
