A strange hole punch-like weather phenomenom has people talking in Virginia Beach. Residents in Virginia Beach witnessed the appearance of a 'fallstreak hole' in the clouds. It was identified by Chief Meteorologist Emeritus Don Slater as a large gap formed in altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds caused by supercooled water suddenly freezing or evaporating. WAVY reports passing aircraft may trigger the formation of fallstreak holes. While Don Slater has never seen a fallstreak hole himself, viewers were able to capture photos of the phenomenon and Slater shared it on his social media.
