Researchers in Hampton Roads are working to address the lack of accessible resources for communities affected by opioid addiction. Despite a decrease in overall overdose numbers, substance abuse remains a significant concern, particularly in Black communities. Dr. Tamika Lett, part of the Old Dominion University Health Equity Coalition, tells 13News Now the coalition aims to raise awareness, destigmatize seeking help, and achieve health equity in minority communities through partnerships with local organizations and educational initiatives.  
 
 
The University of Virginia (UVA) Health Medical Center has been ranked as the number one hospital in Virginia. Newsweek also names it one of the top 50 hospitals in the U.S. The health care editor of Newsweek says the rankings show the hospitals setting standards for medical excellence on a global scale. The "World's Best Hospitals 2025" guide ranks UVA as number 49 in the country.
