Prosecutors are asking a federal judge to sentence a Virginia man to more than 11 years in prison for his role in the 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol. A sentencing memo submitted last week by the U.S. Attorney's Office asks for a 136-month sentence for Zachary Alam of Centreville. Investigators say Alam helped rioters use bike racks to scale the walls of the Capitol on January 6th, then broke glass windows while attempting to break through the doors of the House Speaker's Lobby. Alam was convicted by a federal jury last September on charges that include assault, resisting or impeding officers, civil disorder and destruction of government property. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for next week.

A judge won't extend a temporary protective order filed against Chesterfield State Delegate Mike Jones. Jones' wife, June, asked a judge yesterday to extend the order that was originally granted two weeks ago, but the judge refused. June claimed Mike grabbed her during an argument, and his verbal abuse caused her to have panic attacks. He denied grabbing her and said he never threatened her.
