More information is coming out about the new owners of the Natural Bridge Zoo in Rockbridge County. Gretchen Mogensen is becoming a co-owner of the zoo along with her brothers. They are the children of the former owners Karl and Debbie Mogensen. Gretchen is the zoo's former manager. A social media post says the zoo is operating with a "different approach" under the new owners, promoting "dramatic changes" and "a more innovative and interactive experience." The zoo’s social media post said Asha the elephant has been retired to a sanctuary. It comes following court battles after dozens of animals were seized due to alleged animal abuse. The state justified the seizure of more than 70 animals. The zoo opens for the season tomorrow.

The school district announced yesterday there will be a significant security increase, including more police officers. Also, those attending will go through a metal detector, and any personal items, like cell phones, will have to be in a clear plastic bag. No one without a ticket will be allowed in. Also, no ceremonies will be held at the Altria Theater after there was a deadly shooting outside Huguenot High School's graduation ceremony there last year.
