A Lynchburg woman is behind bars after the shooting death of a 23-year-old man. Lynchburg Police say 43-year-old Deshanta Marshall is accused of shooting the man at an apartment complex on Wednesday. The victim was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Marshall is facing several charges including second-degree murder and felony child endangerment. She's being held in jail without bond.
The wife of a Navy sailor is getting her February arrest in Virginia Beach removed from her record. Jacqueline A. Smith was arrested after a traffic stop at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. Police said Smith was wanted on an assault warrant issued in Baltimore, but was later released after her name and fingerprints didn't match the suspect's. Smith had the arrest expunged during a hearing this week. Smith's lawyer has urged her to pursue a lawsuit against the city because of the stress caused by the mistaken identity arrest.
Virginia will receive nearly 100-million dollars to help fund affordable housing programs. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner announced that the state will receive money from several programs administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funding includes 58-million in community development block grants and more than 24-million for programs to rehabilitate, build or buy affordable homes. The remaining money will help provide emergency shelter for those in need and housing assistance for Virginians with HIV and AIDS.
